SDG 6 Can Be Achieved through Jal Jeevan Mission

Growing population, expanding urbanization, and fast industrialization as well as the demand to increase agricultural production for food security creates conflicting water requirements. In view of its importance, clean water and sanitation constitute the Goal 6 of the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). India has planned to achieve SDG 6 by 2024 through Jal Jeevan Mission.

Wetland Restoration

A wetland is a distinct land area that is saturated or flooded with water either permanently or seasonally. Wetlands are among the most important types of ecosystems.

Types of wetlands:

  • • Inland wetlands: marshes, lakes, rivers, floodplains, and swamps
  • • Coastal wetlands: saltwater marshes, estuaries, mangroves, lagoons and coral reefs
  • • Human-made wetlands: Fish ponds, rice paddies and salt pans
